Occasionally I come across something that is just so cool that although it’s strictly speaking outside the scope of this blog, I have to mention it. This time it’s a boat. Am I a boat person? Hardly. I can appreciate the design and engineering of a fine boat, but I rarely have much interest in owning or otherwise interacting with a boat.
So what is different about the boat I want to show you? I can sum it up in very few words, and I’ll add in a photo as well: Spitfire. The Spitfire, as in the British WW2 fighter plane, with it’s characteristic wing profile. A beatiful aircraft, design perfection. And if you’ve heard one fly, you’ll know what I mean when I say that its 27 litre V12 engine has an incredible sound.
And how does this relate to a boat? Well, take the Rolls-Royce Merlin engine from the Spitfire, all 1000-odd horsepower of it, design a really sleek speedboat around it, and you get the Aeroboat. A boat with a planned production run of 12 and a price that makes a Bugatti Veyron look like a bit of a bargain. Yet, wow, what a bloody incredible boat! If ever there was a boat that could give me a serious case of nautical desire, it’s the Aeroboat.
Heck, just mention the words Rolls-Royce Merlin Spitfire and I’d buy almost anything…
