«Rustic adventures in heritage-infested Norwegian valley» or the less histrionic «My weekend of rustic stuff and crazy rain»? Never easy to know which will prove popular with the crowds keen on some hot stave church and creosote action.

Factuals first: Numedal is a valley in Southern Norway. It was kind if it’s own closed little world for the longest time, farming and competing Christian variants. It was opened up when two hydropower plants were built in the early 1900s, which brought in fresh people and modern times.

The stave church is Uvdal stave church, first built in 1168, expanded and changed many times since. It’s part of a fantastic display now with many historic buildings. Heaven for those that enjoy the look and smell of creosoted wood.

Ask away if you’d like more real Norwegian heritage content (sounding like a real creosote content creator)

Public Service Announcement! Tweed season is rapid

Public Service Announcement! Tweed season is rapidly approaching, and the wise wearer of wool will no doubt already be giving their favourite woolly garms a good airing in the sunshine.
Canny garment gazers will also be limbering up for the coming season by already incorporating elements of their tweedtastic getups, both in preparation and because it just feels good.
Be careful, though, as current temperatures are not great; even though pure wool is a superb technical fibre, going all in while the weather is suboptimal can result in heat stroke.
Play it safe, wool fiends, winter is coming!

PS: As a bonus, I added a couple of examples of local troll damage. Tourists beware!

Garment gazers, quiz time! The jacket I’m wearing today was one I first saw in 14oz in Berlin back in 2013. Fantastic shop, even though they almost threw me out for taking photos. Hey, it was my heyday of blogging and here was deluxe material to be had! Bonus points for getting the fabric right as well.

If I’d been an advocate of AI in the slightest, this caption would be twice as long, with half the substance and almost without flavour. So why are people so obsessed with wanting to use AI for everything?

Just as Spring was warming up nicely, today was a loop back to the cold and wet days of yore. Just as well that I hadn’t fully rotated in the «prancewear» (*), but still had some utilitarian outerwear handy.

Which got me thinking (**) about how we tend to buy clothes for a very specific setting. For me, this is a Tuesday in September, dry and around 12 degrees. Perfect for an assemblage of layers and colours, but not warm enough to overhear. I have infinite combos for days like this. Much relatable, my menswearist chums?

I doubt a bleak Sunday in May, 5 degrees and solid rain, sees as much dedication. Moistness doesn’t isn’t quite as fire, am I wrong, garment gazers?

Oddly, Penny is happy to be outside regardless of the weather. Maybe Corgis have the best coats? She did request I add some outtakes for you to slide into.

Today I’m going for the great outdoors, a retro hiking vibe, with an anorak and hiking boots, a neat little seat for my weary behind, and a good book to relax with.

The hiking boots are something special indeed, as close to bespoke as I’ll likely get. Made for my actual odd little feet, not a standard last. This is a service offered by Chris at @crownnorthampton (listen to
@garmologypodcast #155) if you visit the factory. They’re also made in a leather I found irresistible while browsing their hide store (an olive-oil tanned buffalo hide from Horween). Like I said, as near
bespoke as I can dream of, exquisitely made to order and by today’s standards fairly priced.

The book? «One Summer: America, 1927» by Bill Bryson. A fascinating
book covering the story of just four months – June to September 1927 – in the life of America. In the early days of trans-Atlantic aviation, baseball, from silent movies to talkies, a ton of stuff happened, and
we still feel echoes today. And a lot of stuff hasn’t changed. It also
works brilliantly as an audiobook for when you wake at 2 am and need
Bill’s calming voice to send you back to the land of nod.

Timeless style is a topic that often repeats in my conversations. Does it exist, is it relevant, or is it maybe the antithesis of the market churn of fashion?

So, in the interest of (low-energy high-yield) research, I picked some of my old photos from 7-8 years or so back, distilled them down to 20 and post them here for your consideration.
Some serious, some with my brothers and some just larking around. A cross-section of where I was then, if you like, and I think I could wear it all again, even that many fashions later.

And the Corgis, it still breaks my heart to see Rupert and Pixie in their prime. Sorely missed.
