A little lunchtime walk in sunshine, peace and quiet, with a smattering of appearances by local wildlife (a woodpecker and a couple of flying swans, which kind of sounds like one of those Xmas songs…). Penny is already a pro at the «staring vacantly into the void» pose, yet a little resistant to the cutesy closeups. No doubt she’ll grasp the concept soon enough and stop biting my best sweaters.

Today, we got the first snow of the season. It’s just a taster, really, a little tease of what is to follow. It makes everything seem a little light, though, so it’s very welcome.

The menswear trend sonar here at Garmology Towers has been picking up murmurs recently of tweed caps being out, something to do with overuse due to Pesky Blinkers. I’m not ready to call it a truth quite yet, as there may not be a lot of overlap between tweedy rogues and bros cosplaying retro Brummie gangsters.

I’d like to hear your thoughts on the matter.

I’m uncertain whether it’s relevant or not, but I did overhear a couple of local rapscallions babbling something about «skibbidee no cap» recently. As they were clearly both wearing caps at the time, it may have been mere adolescent posturing.

Looking back through old find some cute ones, some weird ones, and some that seem to stand the test of time. This is one I reckon has held up well, which proves the point that it’s possible to have style outside of fashion. Oddly though, while many like to talk of timeless style, there is a lot of fashion with heritage style and even more so within vintage. Case in point: How frequently are vintage Burberry trenchcoats hauled out as the must-have item of the day?

It’s Friday and Winter is just around the corner and I offer up a cute lil outfit with not one, but two bonus features! Swipe to the 4th photo to see a pretty sweet photo I took while we were walking Penny in the woods last night. She noticed the deer between her and the football field. Cute, right?

Also, I’ve been asked a few times to bring forth more Nordic content, maybe explain some Nordic expressions, after «hygge» became such a success and all. I’m ever agreeable to share my wisdom, such as it is, so today I give you a new expression you can impress your friends with:

«Løksug», pronounced «luhksoog», literally means a craving for raw onions. This comes from when fresh fruit was not widely available in Scandinavia and people would nosh on raw onions, as they were rich in vitamin C and stored easily. As tourism increased with the interest in the Northern Lights around 2003 the inhabitants of the northern regions developed a taste for more exotic fruits such as apples and later oranges. You’ll still find the elders yearning to satisfy the cravings of old, though younger people will freely admit that not reeking of raw onions has done wonders for their social life.

One of the strange things that has happened here in Norway recently is that due to climate changes, the head of the family is required to carry an oar if it is raining outside. Now, clearly, you can tell that it’s not raining right now, so you will be thinking this is just for show. And you are correct, in this case, the oar is merely a prop and me standing there in the sunshine is purely for illustrative purposes.

I’m still onboard with the idea though. Over time I have no doubt the oar will prove both a practical and useful tool. Notwithstanding the manliness of such a finely carved piece, right?

It’s full on Autumn here today, leaves going gravitational, moistness peaking and wind whistling with great enthusiasm. What better time to go spelunking in the storage cellers here at Garmology HQ? Of all the palettes it’s the natural Autumnal tones I like best (luckily my crack team of colour analysts agree that these also make me hella glow like).

I’m wearing a new @gloverall duffle here, a cracking colour, goes well with conkers. Interestingly they’ve added more vintage features to the Monty (a homage to notable dufflist of yesteryear Field Marshal Montgomery) like the leg straps. Not something I’ll use daily, but in an increasingly bland world I heartily approve of bells and whistles.

This week was a bit special for me. I finally got

This week was a bit special for me. I finally got to meet my adopted aunties, Ingunn and Tone. You’ll no doubt be wondering why I adopt aunties, and no it’s not something I make a habit of. These two ladies are very influential in my knowledge and opinions regarding the sustainability and eco-friendliness of textiles though and hence get adopted status.
The occasion this week was a seminar on the use of plastics in textiles, hosted by the University of Oslo where Ingunn Grimstad Klepp is a professor of consumer research (SIFO), the Consumer Council of Norway (Forbrukerrådet) and the environmental organisation Framtiden i våre hender (The future is in our hands).
The topic was «Is it ok to wear plastic?» and I don’t feel like I’m dropping a massive spoiler if I reveal the answer is «no». Textiles are the #3 largest source of microplastics (after car tyres and astroturf on sports fields), which is no surprise, but the microplastics are much less a result of washing the clothes as previously suspected and very more due to synthetic clothes being thrown away.
You’ll have heard both Ingunn and Tone on the @garmologypodcast. Tone has made an interesting career switch from fashion magazine editor to a vocal and ardent supporter of wool and more sustainable clothing. Ingunn is a fount of knowledge about all things about textiles and the environment. Both Ingunn and Tone share actual scientific and researched knowledge. not the wishful-thinking marketing place where much of the information we hear comes from.
